Buildings & Grounds
The Building and Grounds Committee is a permanent committee made up of members who are interested in working on the buildings and grounds and have some skills in this area. New members are welcome and should be recruited according to their gifts. The chairman of the committee serves a three year term. One member of the committee is a Vestry member and serves as the liaison to the Vestry.
The Building and Grounds Committee’s purpose is to be stewards for the maintenance and repair of the buildings and the grounds of St. Martin’s By-the-Lake Episcopal Church.
We review all projects, problems, and proposals prior to making presentations to the vestry.
We oversee and care for:
a. Structure of the building.
b. Repair and maintenance of the exterior and the interior of the church
c. Addition, elimination, or modification of all structures and gardens including memorial walls, the labyrinth, the parking lot, resurfacing, hard cover, drainage, trees, shrubs, and plantings.
d. Development and maintenance of documentation for all infrastructure systems equipment such as HVAC, ovens, sound systems and furniture.
After determining a course of action, a proposal is sent to the Vestry for approval before work begins. All decisions are made with the historic nature of our church building in mind, with the goal of protecting and preserving our historic landmark.
The committee does the physical work when appropriate. When a contractor is needed, the committee reviews and approves the actions of the contractor who provides the service, including snow removal, gardening, landscaping, security, etc.
The Building and Grounds Committee meets on Ministry Night, the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., with additional meetings as needed. An agenda and minutes from the previous meeting are sent by the chairman to members 10 days before the meeting.
Meetings are held at the church.
Spring and Fall All-Parish Work Days
Twice each year the Building & Grounds committee invites and welcomes all members of the parish to spend a few hours on a Saturday helping to care for our church building. We clean, repair, paint, and ready St. Martin’s for the coming season. We welcome and encourage everyone to come and enjoy great fellowship as we work together to preserve our historic church home. Watch the Cloak for dates and times.
